About Us
Mission
To provide easy to use targeted pain relief for adults and children during a needle injection experience and for use in the home for simple injuries.
Kool Shield Ice Pods
Goals
When it comes to exposing skin for a forced needle puncture, no parent, child, hospice elder, diabetes patient, anxious person, or health care provider should have to accept a culture of “grin and bear it.”
When children experience pain from a vaccine or other medical-based needle injection, they are more likely to develop fear-based behaviors toward future injections, often inhibiting their likelihood of accepting life-saving vaccines or medicines.
The power of a toy to bring joy and comfort for children needs no explanation. Combined together, Ice with a Toy, is a simple solution to improve your child’s experience with everyday injuries or common medical procedures.
At home you never know when a bump, scrape or burn will interrupt your day. Kool Shield is always ready in your freezer to numb pain nerves. It’s just the right size ice and easy to hold ice.
“I want to change the ‘grin and bear it’ culture of needle injection.”

Our Story
Kool Shield was created by two brothers: an emergency room doctor with over 30 years of experience and a toy designer with over 30 inventions. Their combined 60 years of problem solving and creating effective and equitable solutions has resulted in this successful collaboration.
The cooling power of ice to anesthetize pain is well known as a tried-and-true solution. Kool Shield was designed as a tool to hold ice so that anyone can easily take advantage of this safe and simple pain-relieving benefit.
Why use Kool Shield instead of an ice cube or ice bag
Ice cubes and ice bags provide either too much or too little cooling and can be difficult to hold and apply.
Kool Shield uses just the right amount of ice for numbing the precise area you need.
The container’s design provides an easy way to hold ice without chilling fingers.
Kool Shield marks an accurate spot for injection by leaving a temporary indentation when pressed on the skin.
The cup and lid structure provides a platform for a variety of toy attachments to distract children.
Kool Shield is easy to use at home to numb skin for medical injections and for pain relief from scrapes, bruises, burns or bug bites.
The current status of kool shield
A non-provisional patent was filed in June of 2021 and is pending. Over 180 patients have already used Kool Shield and improved their injection experience.
Why is it important?
person centered care
The first step in Person Centered Care is understanding that for some people needle injection causes pain and fear. The next important step is offering an effective option to addresses these physical and emotional needs. This empathy and compassion is a corner stone of quality medical care. The modern healthcare consumer is increasingly seeking these type of solutions that offer comfort, control, and convenience.
Vaccinations and Home injections
Billions of vaccinations are given in clinical settings each year plus a variety of self administered home injections.
Children
60% of children are afraid of needle injections. Studies suggest that up to 18% of children are not compliant with vaccinations due to this fear.
Parents
Parents find it very stressful watching their child get a vaccination without pre-injection pain management.
Adults
Adults skip or delay vaccination and other medical injections due to the fear of needles.
